La Trobe University Psychology School Overview

La Trobe’s postgraduate coursework program prepares you for practice and research in clinical psychology or clinical neuropsychology. Gain the specialist training for registration as a professional psychologist and membership of the Australian Psychological Society. We emphasize research based on developments in psychological knowledge.

You will also be eligible for specialized supervision leading to full membership of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. In keeping with the scientist-professional training model, the course emphasizes the application of research based on development in the field of psychology.

You’ll have access to outstanding neuroscience laboratory facilities, Australia’s first Autism Research Centre and La Trobe’s Psychology Clinic, which offers services to the general public.

Practical placements are an important part of La Trobe’s program and are worth 25% of assessment. You will receive practical training and carry out therapy under the supervision of experienced registered psychologists at the La Trobe Psychology Clinic and various external agencies.

Entry Requirements

To qualify for admission, applicants must have:

  • an APAC-accredited Australian Bachelor’s degree with a major in psychology and a minimum B grade average (70 per cent or above) or equivalent across all years
  • an APAC-accredited fourth-year program in psychology including a major thesis component with an upper H2A average (75 per cent or above)
  • two academic referee reports & two professional referee reports
  • experience in volunteer work or work related to psychology

Under the Australian National Law, students must obtain provisional registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia before they commence their program of study, and for the duration of the program. In the event that the Registration Board refuses an application for provisional registration, the offer of candidature in the program will be rescinded – it is not possible to complete the program without holding provisional registration as a psychologist.

Career Opportunities

Graduates are prepared for work as psychologists in the health and government sectors, community organizations, research institutions and industry. You may also work as a clinician, case manager, psychotherapist, manager, researcher, specialist consultant or adviser.

Professional Recognition in Canada
