La Trobe students climbing mountains!

Big-weekend-2The La Trobe University Mountaineering Club (LUMC) has capped off a successful start to the new semester, with over 50 members attending the annual Big Weekend camp at Cathedral Ranges State Park.

The action packed weekend saw a fleet of cars leave from La Trobe University on Friday night, embarking on a two-hour trip to North East Victoria. With the weekend split into three sessions, members were able to choose from bushwalking, white water kayaking and rock climbing, all of which were organized and run by club volunteers.

While taking in some spectacular views and paddling along the Goulburn River, the camp allowed club members to get to know each other and meet new people.

‘The Big Weekend is the biggest trip for the year and one of the few where members can have a go at multiple activities in the two days. It allowed people to have a go at the activities that LUMC regularly participate in and for them to try new things,’ said Club Secretary Emily Willocks.

The La Trobe University Mountaineering Club was established in 1968 and has since grown to over 100 members annually. Facilitating a range of outdoor adventures, such as bushwalking, kayaking / rafting, rock climbing, xc skiing, mountain biking and caving, LUMC is a unique club that caters for a range of interests.

While the club holds regular events on campus, including indoor kayaking and rock climbing (every Tuesday night at the Sports Centre), there are many opportunities to get outside of your comfort zone on regular organized weekend trips.

The club also supports training for members that contribute towards running club trips, such as First Aid, map-reading skills, Swift Water Rescue and Ropes Rescue courses.
