Overview

Deakin University Psychology School Overview

The Master of Psychology (Clinical) provides you with a broad set of clinical skills in a range of assessment and therapy models. Based on an integrative approach to clinical psychology that emphasizes evidence-based practice, the course has been designed in consultation with our industry partners to enable you to develop the academic, practical and research skills necessary to register as a psychologist, and to practise as a clinical psychologist.

Throughout the course you will develop specialist knowledge as well as the general knowledge and skills required by practitioners; advanced knowledge of clinical problems of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood; knowledge and competence in evidence-based psychological assessment; and knowledge and awareness of relevant ethical principles of psychological practice.

The clinical placements are designed to equip students with a range of professional skills and an awareness of professional issues. You will have placements in at least three different settings, so that you can gain experience of adult, adolescent and child problems; community and institutional care; and medical and non-medical agencies. Your placement program will be determined jointly by you, the placement coordinators, and the practitioners supervising the placements.

Entry Requirements

The prerequisite for entry to the course is the completion of a four-year sequence of study in an accredited psychology program which meets national registration requirements and eligibility for Associate Membership of the APS, or equivalent. The four-year sequence may be either an honours program or the combination of a three-year undergraduate degree including a psychology major and an approved postgraduate program.

Entry will be competitive, based on academic results, referees’ reports and interview before a panel of school selection staff.  Relevant professional experience will be a factor in selection.

Under the Australian National Law, students must obtain provisional registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia before they commence their program of study, and for the duration of the program. In the event that the Registration Board refuses an application for provisional registration, the offer of candidature in the program will be rescinded – it is not possible to complete the program without holding provisional registration as a psychologist.
