University of Newcastle Psychology School Overview

University of Newcastle provides a friendly, relaxed but challenging learning environment that focuses on achieving excellence in scholarship, teaching and research. They offer the undergraduate Bachelor of Psychology program accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) at Newcastle (Callaghan) and Central Coast (Ourimbah) campuses. Our postgraduate coursework programs provide professional training in clinical and health psychology and their value is demonstrated by the high demand for graduates for employment in the health services.

They have a very active and enviable research profile with state-of-the-art EEG facilities, access to brain imaging equipment; well-equipped wet and dry laboratories and computer facilities. Members of the School study a diverse range of topics from development in childhood and social influences on decision making, to the study of anxiety disorders and mental illness, and on to the modelling of memory processes and the study of personality and social learning.

University of Newcastle was one of only four University Psychology institutions to be officially rated as performing “well above world standard” (ERA rating of 5) in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia rankings.

Master of Clinical Psychology

The Master of Clinical Psychology is a professional qualification for those who wish to work as clinical psychologists. Graduates will be knowledgeable, skilled and ethical practitioners of Clinical Psychology, capable of adhering to the ‘scientist-practitioner’ model of practice. The program is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), and approved by the College of Clinical Psychologists for the purposes of determining College membership, and accepted by the Psychology Board of Australia as an approved fifth and sixth year of study.. Entry to the University of Newcastle Clinical Psychology programs is competitive and places are limited.

The program team are all experienced clinicians with a wide range of clinical experiences including children & adolescence mental health, trauma and adult mental health.  They also utilize the expertise of local practitioners who enhance our program. A full-time student can expect taught courses, placements and research to utilize 40 hours per week over five days.
