Overview

Curtin University Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy)

The Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy) is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to start a career in physiotherapy. Graduates of this course are eligible to apply for registration to practise physiotherapy in Australia.

What the course involves:

In this course, you will undertake a combination of theoretical, practical and clinical subjects. Most of the first year units have an inter-professional education focus.

In your first year, you will explore the foundations of:

  • health care practice
  • anatomy
  • the structure and function of the human body.

The following years will provide a more intensive study of the musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiopulmonary areas.

Entry Requirements

Completion of a provincial high school diploma with an average of 60 or better in Grade 12, and including a grade of 60 or better in Year 12 English (except Quebec where separate evidence of English is required), however, because of the competitive nature acceptance GPA may run higher.

At least one science course from the following list is required: biology, chemistry, human biology, integrated science, physics or psychology.

Mathematics is desirable.

Clinical Work Experience

You can develop your practical skills in laboratory classes, which can be applied under clinical supervision in hospital and community settings, where you may work with people from all age groups.

Emphasis is placed on professional development and strong interpersonal communication skills, which are attributes of client-centred practice. You will become familiar with acute and long-term case management and may take placements in rural and remote health care settings. In your final year you can undertake case studies within inter-professional groups.

Professional Recognition

Curtin University’s Master of Physiotherapy program is accredited by the Australian Council of Physiotherapy Regulating Authorities. Graduates are eligible for physiotherapy registration in any State or Territory of Australia. Registration in New Zealand is available under the terms of the Trans-Tasman agreement. Graduates applying to licensing in Canada, UK or the USA will be required to provide details of their program of studies to the relevant bodies and sit a licensing examination.

Students wishing to license as a physiotherapist in Canada should contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy for procedures and accreditation procedures. The CAP is the national federation of provincial/territorial regulators in Canada.

researchers have found children who spend a lot of time watching television, have poorer and weaker bones in young adulthood which could significantly impact their health in later life.

Lead researcher Dr Joanne McVeigh, Curtin’s School of Occupational Therapy and Social Work, said the study examined the TV viewing habits of 1,181 young adults over their childhood and adolescence years and related these to how strong their bones were at age 20. …
