Overview

James Cook University Bachelor of Physiotherapy Overview

Situated in the heart of northern Queensland, JCU offers a unique learning setting. Our rural surrounds and large Indigenous communities are a core focus of our curriculum. You will gain job-ready skills through practical work experience in many different physiotherapy fields.

On-campus facilities include a state-of-the-art physiotherapy clinic. Here you will administer treatments to real patients in a supervised real-world setting.

Distance and remote delivery of services are key challenges for modern physiotherapy. At JCU we emphasize access to health-care and we do this by giving you experiences in rural and remote communities and facilities, and by building up relationships with these communities.

What the course involves:

The curriculum includes musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory and neurological assessment and management practices across the lifespan, which includes paediatrics, gerontology, women’s and men’s health.

Entry Requirements

Complete high school diploma with a minimum GPA of 63%.  With applications being very competitive GPA may run higher.  Required Prerequisites are:

  • English and Mathematics B plus any one of the following;
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Health Education
    • Physical Education
    • Physics

Clinical Work Experience

Likewise, your clinical placements present an opportunity to make valuable industry networks throughout Queensland and across Australia.

Our degree is fully accredited with the Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC).

Students wishing to license as a physiotherapist in Canada should contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy for procedures and accreditation procedures. The CAP is the national federation of provincial/territorial regulators in Canada.

Professor Louis Schofield, Director of the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM) at (JCU) in North Queensland has received a $2.8M grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to pursue the pre-clinical development of a vaccine aimed at the goal of malaria eradication.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, and other colleagues and institutions in the USA. …
