Overview

Are you interested in a rewarding health profession that uses physical techniques such as manual therapy and exercise to treat and prevent human movement disorders? The Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of Newcastle combines biomedical and behavioural sciences with essential physiotherapy skills for a career as a physiotherapist.

The physiotherapy laboratories at the University of Newcastle are equipped with modern physiotherapy equipment to ensure students graduate with the up to date skills related to emerging, evidence based technologies.

What the course involves

You will study professional physiotherapy knowledge and skills and learn how it relates to relevant biomedical and behavioural sciences. A case-based learning approach and innovative educational strategies are used to integrate the clinical and basic sciences.

Throughout your theoretical and practical studies you will develop effective interpersonal skills, including communicative and empathetic abilities. You will also have plenty of opportunities to improve your problem solving and manual handling skills during your clinical placements.

Entry Requirements

HSC Chemistry, either Physics or Biology and Advanced English or equivalent

Clinical Work Experience

We think it is really important to put the theory you learn in the classroom into practice in the workplace. Clinical placements in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy start early in the program, and you will complete over 1,000 hours over the course of your studies.

Clinical experience is undertaken in a variety of health settings, which may include:

  • community health centres
  • hospital outpatient clinics
  • hospital wards
  • private practices
  • rehabilitation units

The substantial supervised clinical practice you will complete across the physiotherapy degree will include mandatory placements, some of which will be in rural areas and health settings quite different from the Hunter region.

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of Newcastle has full accreditation awarded by the Australian Physiotherapy Council. Graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the Australian Practitioner Health Regulation Agency (APHRA).

Students wishing to license as a physiotherapist in Canada should contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy for procedures and accreditation procedures. The CAP is the national federation of provincial/territorial regulators in Canada.
