Overview

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy prepares students for a professional career in physiotherapy and enables them to enter professional practice in various fields including: women`s and children`s health, sports, musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, neurological and geriatric physiotherapy.

The program provides a balanced education in the related areas of medical science, humanities and physiotherapy practice and promotes evidence based practice and clinical reasoning approaches.

Courses in all years of the program fall within the biophysical sciences and professional studies. A major section of the early years of the program is the study of normal movement and the basic medical science courses. The remainder of the program deals with abnormal movement and the nature and application of physical modalities used in prevention and treatment of disease and disability. The student is trained not only as a member of the health care team concerned with the physical and psychosocial rehabilitation of sick and disabled people, but also to be a practitioner of first contact concerned with prevention of disability in the workplace, in the community and in recreational pursuits.

The program requires completion of 144 units of study.

Entry Requirements

Canada High School (OSSD) requirement is minimum 80%. Assumed knowledge in Biology and Physics.

Clinical Work Experience

Students gain a range of professional practical experiences by undertaking clinical placements at the University-based Physiotherapy Clinic located at the City East campus and within a variety of metropolitan, rural and regional health settings. Students spend at least one of their placements outside Adelaide in a country or interstate location and are also required to undertake placements outside of teaching weeks.

Professional Recognition

The program is accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council and satisfies the academic requirements for registration as a physiotherapist with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia. Successful completion of the program is accepted for membership of the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

Students wishing to license as a physiotherapist in Canada should contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy for procedures and accreditation procedures. The CAP is the national federation of provincial/territorial regulators in Canada.
