FAQ Friday Part 4

Accommodation costs are a big worry for students when studying abroad, or when studying anywhere for that matter, and naturally so. You want to ensure your living situation is one that is comfortable, and affordable! Cost is a big factor when choosing to study overseas and after the tuition fee’s are paid and that worry is out of the way, your living expenses are the next factor to focus on.

KOM Consultants works with many universities in Australia, the UK and Ireland so it’s very hard to just sum up the accommodation cost query to one amount. Not the answer you want to hear I know, but here are a few varying amounts for some of the universities that we are working with!

Ireland

IT Carlow

The most popular way to find accommodation is through accommodation websites. Accommodation may also be found through local auctioneers and in local newspapers. Here’s a quick idea of what accommodation around Carlow costs.

IT Sligo

Affordable high quality student accommodation (€90 per week including utilities) within a 5 minute walk from the campus.

IT Sligo offers a range of purpose built student accommodation, self-catering options and digs.

In total there are over 2,000 beds available in The Gateway Apartments, Ard Nua Village, The Village Clarion Road, The Grove, Yeats Village, Milligan Place and the Lake Isle Accommodation. There are also a number of popular areas off campus for students to reside, including Mulberry Park, Rathbraughan, Cartron, The Mall and Clarion Village.

UCC

UCC Castlewhite Apartments were built in 1991 and refurbished to a high standard in 2007 and 2009. Castlewhite is conveniently located adjacent to University College Cork and comprises 63 apartments, ranging from 3 bedroom apartments to 6 bedroom apartments. In total the complex accommodates 298 students. Please note that there are no en-suite bedrooms at Castlewhite.

England

Robert Gordon University

RGU’s on campus accommodation complex has approximately 1750 bedspaces spread over a wide range of locations. All have single study bedrooms which provide a private place to study. Some are ensuite and some have shared facilities. Nearly all have a communal kitchen where flatmates and friends can meet and socialise. Site staff are available 24/7 for your convenience.

For 2015/16 the price ranges from approximately £100 per week to around £145, depending on location and room type. At nearly all sites these prices include utilities, personal contents insurance and high speed internet access.

University of Gloucestershire

The University of Gloucestershire has approximately 1,380 rooms in halls of residence in Cheltenham and Gloucester.

Equipped with:

bed, wardrobe, drawers, chair, desk and bookcase
kitchen is equipped with fridge, freezer, microwave, cooker, toaster, kettle and cupboards
laundry facilities are available on-site
regular bus services run between campuses and residences

Cost of living in halls

Weekly rent ranges from £96 – £180 (based on 2015-16 academic year). The rent includes all utility bills, internet costs, contents insurance and cleaning of kitchens once a week. Contracts are for a fixed term of 40 weeks.

Bangor University

Currently the University has about 3,000 accommodation places available in Bangor. Their halls are situated at Ffriddoedd Village, St Mary’s Village and Neuadd Garth.

All accommodation is self-catered and most of our rooms are en-suite. Standard rooms are available in some halls – you will find more details below.

All students living in University owned accommodation receive gym and Campus Life membership included in the price of their halls.

As the rooms vary, the rent is approx £108 per week to £116 per week.

Australia

University of Adelaide

University- managed student accommodation provides students with a simple and safe accommodation option, considered by most to be an investment in ensuring the first year at University is a successful one. There are many types of accommodation, including university management accommodation, such as “The Village.”

The Village is home to over 400 students each year and offers a range of accommodation options.

Situated in the vibrant west end of Adelaide’s central business district, The Village
offers independent living in a supervised environment. Students may choose to live in a fully furnished townhouse or apartment.

Every townhouse and apartment is as ‘good as new’ having been refurbished last year with new paint and carpet. Prices vary depending on the type of accommodation.

Griffith University

Griffith Accommodation have a range of different Colleges and room options to choose from, all of which are co-educational. Rooms range from $165 to ¢200 a week.

Short Term accommodation is available for Griffith University students aged 18-26. Accommodation is offered at the rate of $54.00 per person per night.
