Professor Louis Schofield, Director of the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM) at James Cook University (JCU) in North Queensland has received a $2.8M grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to pursue the pre-clinical development of a vaccine aimed at the goal of malaria eradication.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, and other colleagues and institutions in the USA. …

University of Sydney’s application deadline has now passed for Sydney’s Medical School.

Some KOM universities are still accepting applications into Australian Medical Schools in Australia for this upcoming February 2014 intake.

James Cook University offers an undergraduate MBBS program which is six years in length.  You can hold a high school diploma and/or university degree to apply.  The application deadline is August 31st for the February 2014 intake.

Celebrating 100 years of tropical medicine

A special event was held in Townsville to celebrate the centenary of the official opening of Australian Institute of Tropical Medicine (AITM).

On June 28, 1913, the AITM was officially opened. This was Australia’s first independent medical research complex. The building, a Queensland Heritage Register-listed place, still exists adjacent to the old Townsville General Hospital.
