Melbourne was named the Best Student City in Australia (and second best globally) in the QS Best Student Cities 2016 ranking. But why?

  1. Most liveable city: Melbourne was ranked the world’s most liveable city The Economist’s liveability rankings for a fifth consecutive year in 2015.
  2. Mix of people: Melbourne is a multicultural city. Within the index, Melbourne has the highest score in the “student mix” category – calculated based on the relative size and diversity of each city’s student population, levels of social inclusion and tolerance. Fun fact: Melbourne has the largest Greek-speaking population outside of Greece.
  3. Greenery: The city is filled with parks and gardens, most of which are free to enjoy! These are perfect for relaxing on long weekends, while you work on your university assignments, or host study groups.
  4. The streets are an art gallery: Melbourne has been considered by many to be the street art capital of the world. Some little alleyways in the CBD have been taken over by stunning murals, calligraphy and colourful portraits.
  5. It has great public transport: Melbourne’s tram network covers more than 240km and is known to be one of the best in the world. It’s also the largest tram network outside of Europe!
  6. International students: There are approximately 270,000 university students in Melbourne, with more than a third (91,000) being international students.
  7. Entertainment: There is always something going on around town! From Melbourne International Comedy Festival to concerts to sporting events, Melbourne is not a city that is easy to get bored in.
  8. Food and drink: Melbourne is brimming with fantastic cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars. It’s also known as the ‘coffee capital’ of Australia.
  9. People are friendly: Whether it’s a smile back at you when you’re walking down the street, or someone asking how you are while you are doing your weekly grocery shopping, Melbournians are known to be very open and friendly.
