University of Dundee Bachelor of Laws LLB Overview

The University of Dundee’s Law School in Scotland is a unique UK Law School. This Law School offer students a choice between two distinct Bachelor of Laws LLB programs:

  • Scots Bachelor of Laws LLB at the University of Dundee – 4 Years
  • English Bachelor of Laws LLB at the University of Dundee – 3 Years

Not all students will decide to pursue a legal career. The transferable skills developed during the course of the Dundee LLB are extremely attractive to employers in other fields. These include the ability to carry out research effectively, the efficient and accurate analysis of documents, as well as the persuasive presentation of argument, both orally and in writing.

The size of the Dundee Law School means that there is close contact between students and staff. Excellence in teaching is a priority for Dundee. Small group teaching with full time members of staff is guaranteed, as is prompt feedback on written work. Various assessment models are employed, from traditional closed book exams, to online tests, to assessed presentations. Many courses have some form of group work. All modules have an element of continuous assessment.

Scots Bachelor of Laws LLB (4 Year)

The Scots law LLB at the University of Dundee allows students to gain full exemption from the professional examinations of the Law Society of Scotland and the Faculty of Advocates and as such represents the first stage in qualifying as a lawyer in Scotland.

English Bachelor of Laws LLB (3 Year)

The English law LLB at the University of Dundee allows students to gain full exemption from the professional examinations of the Law Society of England & Wales and the Bar Council and as such represents the first stage in qualifying as a lawyer in England & Wales. Many Dundee students equally go on to train for the legal profession in Northern Ireland.

The University of Dundee Law School offers two fully qualifying law degrees for the legal profession either in Scotland or in England and Wales, and Northern Ireland. Dundee is the only law school in the UK to offer this choice.

For students on the Scots stream of the LLB at Dundee, there is also a unique and intellectually demanding option to achieve dual qualification. On graduating with this degree, students have a choice of jurisdictions where they can study for their postgraduate professional qualification, giving our graduates a significant competitive advantage in the marketplace.

With good staff to student ratio Dundee Law places a strong emphasis on small group teaching and support and in the last Quality Assurance Agency rating we were rated as ‘commendable’, the equal highest rating achieved by any law school in Scotland. Their research is also of the highest order and in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise Dundee’s Law School were one of only two law schools in the UK to have 100% of our research rated as being of ‘international standard’.

Dundee Law Mooting Society

A moot is a legal debate and the Dundee Mooting Society is one of the most successful in the UK. The Society runs training and internal competitions for students and teams from Dundee Law compete in most of the major mooting competitions in the UK and internationally.

Law Clinic

Dundee’s Law School also runs a Law Clinic which provides students with practical experience in dealing with clients and real life problems as well as reinforcing links with the profession. The Law Clinic also offers modules for credit.

Library Facilities

The University Library has a large collection of material for all jurisdictions in the UK, including EC material, as well as considerable holdings of overseas material. The library is also fully adapted for wireless communications, houses an IT suite and offers a wide range of electronic resources including access to many important legal databases.

A Dynamic and Outward looking UK Law School, University of Dundee

The School of Law at the University of Dundee in Scotland is a dynamic and outward looking Law School which seeks to achieve excellence in teaching, research and professional development. The teaching of law can be traced back to as early as 1410 through the School’s origins in the University of St. Andrews.

Today, Dundee provides a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. These include qualifying undergraduate LLB degrees in both Scots law and English law and a joint degree in Scots and English law which allows graduates to proceed to professional training in either Scotland, or, England & Wales/Northern Ireland or, both.

A number of joint degree programs are available including the highly successful Joint LLM with the University of Cergy-Pontoise outside Paris which allows students to gain advanced instruction in issues of international commercial law from both common law and civil law perspectives. Distance learning is another activity supported in the Law School. In particular, the Health care Law and Ethics program which is designed for health care professionals.

Dundee was one of only two law schools in the United Kingdom to achieve a 100% international standard classification, with half of their submissions being graded internationally excellent or world leading. In partnership with the Scottish Information Commissioner, the Law School has also launched the Centre for Freedom of Information.
