Occupational therapy is about people’s occupational needs and the loss of daily living skills that follow physical, emotional, psychological and social disorders. Occupational therapists help people with various health conditions and disabilities, improving their ability to perform tasks in their daily life and work.

Occupational therapists help people to become more independent and improve their productivity, well-being and quality of life.

The Occupational Therapy (OT) program at La Trobe University in Australia aims to qualify students to work in various occupational therapy roles.  La Trobe’s Occupational Therapy program covers the knowledge and skills students need to assess and treat patients, including the use of occupations, intervention techniques, the design of equipment, and adaptation of environments. The Occupational Therapy program at La Trobe University  also offers supervised clinical placements to help La Trobe students develop a sound basis for professional practice.

La Trobe Occupational Therapy graduates work in health and welfare systems including general hospitals, rehabilitation centres, community health services, mental health agencies, health services for older people and children with special needs, and support services for intellectually disadvantaged people. La Trobe Occupational Therapy graduates may also work in private practice or as a coordinator or consultant in areas such as occupational health and safety.

Clinical Work Experience

Occupational Therapy students at La Trobe University in Australia will complete 1000 hours of professional practice placements in the final two years of the Occupational Therapy (OT) program. This consists of four weeks in third year and two eight-week blocks and a project placement in fourth year at La Trobe University. Students are able to gain experience in a variety of government and non-government agencies including hospitals, community agencies, schools and rehabilitation centres.   La Trobe University  students will experience working with people of different ages, recently acquired and long-standing health needs, and interventions that focus on the person, their occupation and the environment.

Entry Requirements

Completed High school diploma carrying 70%.

Prerequisites: English, one of Biology, Chemistry, any Mathematics, Physical Education or Physics.

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition in Canada

La Trobe University Occupational Therapy OT graduates are eligible to apply for membership to the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists.

Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Occupational Therapy Practice at La Trobe University  is also recognized by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, allowing graduates to register in the United Kingdom, the USA, Sweden and other countries/regions (subject to national registration requirements).
