Curtin University Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (OT) Overview

Curtin University’s Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (OT) program in Australia prepares students to work as professional occupational therapists, training to assess and treat people who, because of illness, injury or circumstance, are limited in their ability to undertake activities of everyday life.

The Occupational Therapist OT course at Curtin University is recognized by the World Federation of Occupational Therapy and encompasses a broad range of core units, covering areas such as:

• environment, health and disability
• ergonomics and safety science psychology
• psychology
• physical rehabilitation
• Indigenous cultures and health
• neuropsychiatry

Curtin’s Occupational Therapy course teaches students to identify barriers – physical, social, attitudinal or legislative – that prevent engagement in occupation and will encourage to find interventions, strategies and solutions.

To help with studies, Curtin University students will have access to laboratories, learning spaces and resource rooms that are tailored for learning the essential skills required for working in occupational therapy. Curtin’s Bachelor of Occupational Therapy students can practice individual, group and family-centred care.

Clinical Work Experience

There are opportunities to take three placements within Curtin’s Occupational Therapy program, each lasting seven weeks, in an inter-professional environment. Students can also choose to participate in the Go Global program, where a four-week fieldwork placement is offered in Cambodia, China, India or Ukraine.

Entry Requirements

Completed High School diploma carrying 70% (best of 6). Applicants are required to have completed at least one science subject.

Professional Recognition

As a graduate of Curtin’s Occupational Therapy OT program in Australia, students will be eligible to apply for registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (the national board). Curtin students can also choose to be a member of the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists and/or Occupational Therapy Australia (WA).

Registration for practice will allow students to practice occupational therapy in all Australian states and territories. Curtin Occupational Therapy graduates may apply for registration in most countries, although some may involve sitting a licensing examination. The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy is recognized by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

researchers have found children who spend a lot of time watching television, have poorer and weaker bones in young adulthood which could significantly impact their health in later life.

Lead researcher Dr Joanne McVeigh, Curtin’s School of Occupational Therapy and Social Work, said the study examined the TV viewing habits of 1,181 young adults over their childhood and adolescence years and related these to how strong their bones were at age 20. …
