University of South Australia Bachelor of Occupational Therapy  Overview

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) at University of South Australia prepares students for dynamic careers across the diverse areas of occupational therapy practice. Students develop knowledge and skills in mental health, acute care, physical rehabilitation, community health, work rehabilitation, aged care and paediatrics. With a strong focus on patient outcomes, Occupational Therapy (OT) students at University of South Australia advance their competency in the science behind occupational therapy as well as the communication and relationship skills essential for patient care.

Early in the Occupational Therapy program at UniSA in Australia, students cover the basic sciences that underpin the study and practice of occupational therapy including human anatomy, human physiology, human neurosciences, growth and lifespan development, psychology, occupational science and sociology. These courses within the program at University of South Australia form the basis for understanding the links between human occupations, health, development, illness and disability.

The University of South Australia OT program structure introduces students to foundation knowledge and skills in first and second year with practice application in class to provide a basis for developing skill mastery in third and fourth year. The occupational therapy specific courses represent the many areas of practice; some relating to specific practice environments and others to clusters of conditions. Use of authentic case studies within these courses at University South Australia provides a structured learning opportunity to develop and extend occupational therapy competencies and graduate qualities. By third year, students are expected to demonstrate their understanding and application of knowledge and skills in a structured practice setting. Fourth year provides multiple practice opportunities under supervision of an occupational therapist in a range of settings. Emphasis is placed on students developing their competence and confidence as independent learners and ultimately as University of South Australia graduate occupational therapists. Knowledge and skills in problem solving, communication, lifelong learning, group work, ethical action and valuing difference are qualities that are emphasized and developed throughout the program.
