Overview

ACU Bachelor of  Occupational Therapy Overview

The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at Australian Catholic University ACU in Australia will teach you how to enable individuals, groups and communities to participate in activities which are meaningful to them. Occupational therapists work with a range of clients to help them identify physical, cognitive or societal barriers to participation. Occupational therapists work with clients to assess their environment and help them adapt and participate in daily activities which most people take for granted.

The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (OT) at Australian Catholic University (ACU) provides students with cultural awareness and a broad range of foundation knowledge and skill since the first year.  These focus on the relationship between health and occupation, the structure and function of the human body, and the psychological aspects of society, families and individuals that influence capacity and opportunity for participation in occupations.  In second and third years at ACU, specific skills are taught in occupational therapy practice areas such as physical rehabilitation, workplace safety and ergonomics, pediatrics and mental health in preparation for the first major clinical placements in third year.  Foundation knowledge extends to include the neurosciences and research and measurement skills.  In the final year at ACU in the Occupational Therapy program, students study further practice areas such as two clinical placements.  Capstone units aim to integrate the four years of leaning and develop advanced clinic, leadership and evaluation skills in ACU Occupational Therapy students.

Consistent with ACU core curricular goals, community engagement opportunities are embedded across the Occupational Therapy  program.  Australian Catholic University ACU students will be prepared for and participate in community engagement activities throughout second year.  Through community engagement activities, students will work collaboratively with community groups and organizations to achieve mutually agreed goals that build capacity, especially with those who are marginalized and disadvantaged.

The Occupational Therapy course at ACU in Australia is offered over 8 semesters with 40 credit points required each semester of full time study.  The course structure is composed of seven foundation units, one University core unit, 18 occupational therapy units and four professional practice units.

High achieving Bachelor of Occupational Therapy OT students at Australian Catholic University can undertake honours in the third and fourth years, provided they meet admission requirements.

Occupational Therapy OT graduates at ACU will be eligible to work in hospitals, community health centres, rehabilitation centres or private practice, mental health centres, work and accident rehabilitation, schools or early intervention centres for children, nursing homes and aged care facilities, government policy units or in consultative services.
