More than 100 RMIT automotive and mechanical engineering students have trained this year at BMW Group Australia’s National Training Centre in Melbourne.

The undergraduate and postgraduate students from the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

heard the latest concepts in automobile design as well as insights into BMW’s unique product philosophy.

BMW instructors told them how engineers and designers work together closely during the development of a model to ensure efficiency of production and the quality of the final product.

The students visited the workshops, where the instructors introduced them to a wide range of BMW vehicles, from the BMW 3 Series to the BMW 7 Series.

Professor Sylvester Abanteriba, from the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, said: “In the workshops they learnt more about the special features of each model and appreciated the effort involved in creating that unique, perfect driving machine.

“The students gained a lot of knowledge about the BMW engines and the technology that goes into making them highly efficient; a key factor of the company’s strategy.

“They were inspired by BMW’s drive toward developing zero emissions vehicles and its general push for sustainable mobility.”

Over the past 14 years the BMW Group in Munich, Germany, has provided internships for RMIT students through the RMIT International Industry Experience and Research Program.

Recently the collaboration has grown to include PhD programs.

“The practical orientated program that BMW Group Australia provides for RMIT students at its national training centre brings an invaluable component to our relationship with the BMW Group as a whole,” Professor Abanteriba said.

“This helps us to inculcate in our students the practical skills so invaluable for their professional development.”

Silvia Seibold, BMW Australia project Manager-Strategy and Marketing said: “University collaborations are one of the BMW Group’s global strategic goals.

“As part of BMW Group Australia’s partnership with RMIT University some of the current activities include a mentoring program, guest lecturing, membership of the MBA Advisory Board, internships, international student exchange program, a mini RMIT Open Day and a BMW Corporate offer to RMIT staff.”
