Prateek Konnur, a final year student, enrolled in Griffith’s Masters of Aviation Management program by distance, was recently announced as one of the two winners of this year’s Dr Peter Gardiner Student Grant and invited to participate in the CHC Summit held in Vancouver, Canada. The Summit is annually attended by hundreds of aviation delegates from around the world who collaborate and openly share the foundations of their Safety Management Systems and create a platform for learning and networking. This unity acts as a positive contributor to reducing risks associated with the many facets of aviation while providing the opportunity for experts to help increase the industry’s level of understanding of human factors and safety.

The highlight of Prateek’s experience was the exclusive two-day pre-summit HFACS (The Human Factors Analysis and Classification System) course presented by Dr Scott Shappell – one of the developers of the HFACS framework. The training seminar educated Prateek on developing effective error management programs, conduct an applied human error analysis during accident investigations and utilise the HFACS framework to identify a precise cause of human error.  Prateek looks forward to using the comprehensive knowledge gained into his Masters’ dissertation in which he aims to analyse the effects of laser illuminations on flight crews from a human factor’s standpoint. The Summit experience overall has allowed Prateek to express a more favourable and embracing outlook towards the world of aviation safety. Prateek encourages all Griffith aviation students to apply for the fantastic opportunity in hopes of being a part of this incredible industry collaboration.

About the Summit

The Summit, hosted by CHC Helicopter is recognised by many as one of the most important safety conferences in the world. Honoured after the late Dr Peter Gardiner, who was president and chief executive officer of the Southern California Safety Institute (SCSI), the grant covers admission to the 3-day Summit, a choice of one of the pre-event courses, as well as full hotel and travel reimbursement. Students currently enrolled in an aviation program are eligible to apply for the grant. Two winners are selected each year and invited to participate in the Summit.
