KOM Consultants  Canadian law students graduate from La Trobe

This year, La Trobe Law has seen the first group of Canadian law students graduate.

The seven students – Shali Peiris, Elmira Haj Imani, Konstantine Ketsetzis, Ryan Findlay, Ljubica Durlovska, Pooja Sethi and Alessandro Colonnier – all started the three year Graduate Entry program in 2008.

‘I enjoyed the opportunity La Trobe gave me to get hands-on legal experience. From offering the Court Experience Program (where the student shadows a barrister from a top tier Melbourne law firm) to final year legal work (where a student can apply for work at a nearby law firm to substitute elective classes), I felt like I had real opportunities to work within the legal profession. La Trobe was constantly trying to offer its students more opportunities to integrate themselves in the Melbourne legal community, and I am grateful for all the experience I was able to garner while still studying,’ says Alessandro Colonnier.

Alessandro has now been offered a position at an intellectual property law firm in Toronto, where he will be able to utilise his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering.

‘What I enjoyed most was having the opportunity to live in a different place and make great friends while obtaining an education. Everyone, including staff and peers, were most accommodating and helpful in every way. It was also great to be able to travel around Australia while on school holidays. I had a blast overall,’ says Ljubica Durloska.

The group of Canadian students contributed in many ways to the life of the School, getting involved with the Law Students’ Association, participating in competitions and mooting.

‘We have been really sad to see this group of Canadians depart, but are looking forward to seeing how they fare as they move on to the next stage of their lives. In particular, we are interested in what they have to do in order to be admitted back home and early indications are (based on one student’s ruling in November 2010) that they will not have to do a significant amount of further study in order to be eligible to undertake Articles in Canada. That is good news for our current students and attests the quality of our programs,’ says Mrs Heather King, La Trobe law lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Law Studies.

Some of the students have also been to Shanghai with the Head of the School of Law and participated in the summer school Intro to Chinese Law program there. One of them, Shali Peiris, even won an internship at the UN after just six months at La Trobe.
