Curtin University Bachelor of Science (Speech Pathology) Overview

The Bachelor of Science (Speech Pathology) at Curtin University prepares you for a career as a Speech Pathologist. Speech pathologists are specialists who diagnose, treat and provide management services to people with communication disorders, such as speech, language, voice, fluency and reading difficulties, or people who have physical problems with eating or swallowing. A speech pathologist may treat people of all ages, and may work in the public health sector, private health, community and non-profit organizations, and in education.

The Speech Pathology undergraduate degree at Curtin University provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to gain a comprehensive understanding of: communication development, developmental and acquired communication and swallowing disorders, clinical practice in speech pathology, clinical measurement, and research. During the course, Curtin University students will experience working in an interprofessional team.

The Curtin University Speech Pathology discipline-specific studies will focus on three streams:

  • Human Communication Science (theory to practice)
  • Clinical Science in Speech Pathology (practice to theory)
  • Research Methods

In the final year, Curtin University’s Speech Pathology students may be offered a place in the honours program.

Clinical Work Experience

Curtin University Speech Pathology students apply learning during supervised clinical practice in the on-campus clinic and in professional practice settings.

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of a provincial high school diploma with an average of 60 or better in Grade 12
  • a grade of 60 or better in Year 12 English (except Quebec where separate evidence of English is required).
  • Prerequisites: Applicants are required to have completed at least one science subject. Biology, chemistry, human biology, physics, and mathematics are desirable.

Professional Recognition in Canada

The Bachelor of Science (Speech Pathology) degree at Curtin University is accredited by Speech Pathology Australia. Upon graduation Speech Pathology graduates at Curtin University may be eligible for membership.

Speech Pathology graduates at Curtin University who apply to licensing in Canada, UK or the USA will be required to provide details of their program of studies to the relevant bodies and sit a licensing examination.

Curtin University researchers have found children who spend a lot of time watching television, have poorer and weaker bones in young adulthood which could significantly impact their health in later life.

Lead researcher Dr Joanne McVeigh, Curtin’s School of Occupational Therapy and Social Work, said the study examined the TV viewing habits of 1,181 young adults over their childhood and adolescence years and related these to how strong their bones were at age 20. …
