Australian Catholic University Bachelor of Speech Pathology Overview

ACU’s four year Bachelor of Speech Pathology prepares students to assess and work with people who have trouble communicating and/or swallowing to optimize their functioning.

The Bachelor of Speech Pathology at ACU encompasses all aspects of communication including speech, writing, reading, signs, symbols and gestures. Speech pathologists also work with people who have difficulties swallowing food and drink.

The Speech Pathology course ACU encompasses all aspects of communication including:

  • speech
  • writing
  • reading
  • signs
  • symbols and gestures

Speech pathologists also work with people who have difficulties swallowing food and drink, such as children with a cleft lip and palate.

Consistent with ACU’s core curriculum, unique opportunities in community engagement are embedded across a suite of units during the Bachelor of Speech Pathology program.

ACU students will be prepared for and commence community engagement activities in second year. ACU students will have the opportunity to continue with these activities in subsequent semesters within the ACU Speech Pathology program. Through community engagement activities, students will work collaboratively with community groups and organizations to achieve mutually agreed goals, especially with those who are marginalized and disadvantaged.

The Bachelor of Speech Pathology commenced at ACU’s Melbourne and North Sydney campuses in 2013 and at the Brisbane campus in 2014.

Clinical Work Experience

ACU’s Speech Pathology Clinical placement is offered throughout this speech pathology degree, starting in the first year. In the fourth and final year, clinical placement is a major part of the course. ACU Speech Pathology students will be required to undertake clinical placements under the supervision of a practising speech pathologist totalling over 1000 hours.

Entry Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Canadian Provincial High School Diploma with an overall average of 60%.
  • Prerequisites: English (Advanced); plus at least one of biology, chemistry, physics, or personal development, health and physical education

Professional Recognition

Professional Recognition in Canada

The ACU speech pathology program has been developed to ensure that all aspects of the program can be accredited and thus enable speech pathology graduates at ACU to meet the Competency Based Occupational Standards (CBOS 2011).

This is a prerequisite for achieving entry-level requirements to practice speech pathology in Australia and New Zealand. ACU will seek accreditation of it’s Bachelor of Speech Pathology from Speech Pathology Australia.

Accreditation is not possible until the first cohort of students is in the final years of the program. Following accreditation, graduates will be eligible to become a practising member of Speech Pathology Australia.

ACU’s Bachelor of Speech Pathology graduates applying to licensing in Canada, UK or the USA will be required to provide details of their program of studies to the relevant bodies and sit a licensing examination.
