University of Sydney Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) Overview

Speech pathologists work with children and adults with communication difficulties, including problems with speaking, comprehension, reading, writing, voice problems and stuttering. Speech pathologists also work with children and adults who have swallowing difficulties or need alternative ways to communicate.

University of Sydney’s Speech Pathology students will be involved in the study and treatment of communication disorders in both children and adults, and will learn from the leaders in speech pathology. The Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) at University of Sydney will prepare students to assess and treat people who have a communication disability, including difficulties with speaking, using and understanding language, voice, fluency, hearing, reading and writing.

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) at University of Sydney is a four-year full-time which consists of 30 core units of study. Speech Pathology students will complete 192 credit points to be awarded the undergraduate Speech Pathology degree.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is home to the renowned Australian Stuttering Research Centre which has been responsible for numerous breakthroughs in stuttering treatment. Researchers from the Centre contribute significantly to the course, and Speech Pathology students have access to the on-site teaching clinic at University of Sydney which services the community and gives candidates the opportunity for hands-on experience.

Clinical Work Experience

From the second year of the Speech Pathology course at University of Sydney, speech pathology students will have an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of practicum experiences as part of the clinical training placements. Placements occur on-campus at University of Sydney and in off-campus placements in metropolitan and country areas and sometimes interstate and overseas.

In addition, eligible speech pathology candidates at University of Sydney have the opportunity to take part in the FHS Abroad program which involves academic study and a four to six week placement with non-government organizations and other development agencies in one of a small number of countries in South and South East Asia. University of Sydney offers this 6 credit point elective unit of study and is available to candidates in their senior years and offers a hands-on understanding of global health challenges in an overseas community through work with two well established Australian volunteer agencies.
