The course caters for graduates of an appropriate undergraduate human biology degree to provide a focused training in physiotherapy. The degree will incorporate lectures, laboratories and tutorial sessions with a strong professional practice component to provide students with the necessary knowledge, attitudes and clinical decision making skills required to practise as physiotherapists. A series of problem based clinical studies will further develop the skills and flexibility of students, allowing them to adapt to the challenges encountered in the delivery of physiotherapy in a wide variety of settings.

Professional experience will be gained in public hospitals and private practices in the ACT and surrounding region. This will be consistent with the guidelines for registration of physiotherapists approved by the Australian Physiotherapy Council. Clinical Log Book entries will supplement the clinical and professional aspects. Monitoring of the academic rigour will occur through a University of Canberra course consultative committee.

Clinical Work Experience

All students in the course are required complete clinical practice placements in blocks of time, often outside of teaching time. These clinical practice placements are essential to the program and are assessed. Prior to commencing clinical practice, all students need to present a complete immunization schedule, and First Aid certificates including CPR, as a requirement of the ACT and NSW health departments. All students are required to undergo an Australian Federal Police Record Check prior to undertaking clinical experience in the ACT, and a NSW Police check before undertaking practice in NSW.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have completed undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, Human Kinetics or other relevant Health Science area, (with successful completion of units of study in Musculoskeletal Anatomy, Advanced Functional Anatomy, Physiology or Exercise and Biomechanics) and have a history of above average grades. Admission will be competitive based on prior academic performance.

Professional Recognition

The University of Canberra’s Master of Physiotherapy course has been accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council. Graduates of University of Canberra’s Master of Physiotherapy are eligible for registration as a Physiotherapist by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Graduates applying to licensing in Canada, UK or the USA will be required to provide details of their program of studies to the relevant bodies and sit a licensing examination.

Students wishing to license as a physiotherapist in Canada should contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy for procedures and accreditation procedures. The CAP is the national federation of provincial/territorial regulators in Canada.
