Software development is the set of activities that results in software products. Software is everywhere in our lives: from mobile phones to business systems and cloud based services. Software developers work in collaborative teams to solve real problems. This three-year programme equips students with the skills required to work in a diverse range of areas within software development and support. Students follow our new ‘learning by doing’ model in first year with continuous assessment replacing final exams. Modules include a broad range of subjects including: programming; operating systems; networking; computer hardware; web; mobile and cloud programming; computer architecture; software engineering and an industry work placement.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) Software Development Overview

Software development is the computer programming, documenting, testing, and bug fixing involved in creating and maintaining applications and frameworks involved in a software release life cycle and resulting in a software product. In the broad sense, it includes all that is involved between concepts through to the final production of software. It can include identification of required software, analysis of software requirements, specification of software requirements, software design, programming, testing and maintenance.This four-year honours programme equips students with the range of skills required to become competent software developers. Students follow our new ‘learning by doing’ model in first year with continuous assessment replacing final exams. Modules for the first three years include a broad range of subjects including: programming; operating systems; networking; computer hardware; web programming; systems analysis; computer architecture; software engineering and an industry work placement. Year 4 concentrates on high-level software development topics such as graphics, network programming, web and cloud development, artificial intelligence and an extensive project.

Graduates will have the option to progress to postgraduate studies at either Masters or Doctoral level within the GameCORE Research Centre at IT Carlow or elsewhere. Graduates will also be eligible to undertake the MSc in IT Management or the MA in Interaction Design at IT Carlow.

Computer Systems Management involves the management of complex computer systems in organizations, including the selection, installation and maintenance of all computing technologies. This is a critical role as the efficient management of IT (Information Technology) is vitally important for all aspects of a business, from customer service to finance, sales, manufacturing, storage and delivery. This three-year programme provides a unique blend of IT and business subjects that are an essential element in the role of a modern IT manager. The programme follows a ‘learning by doing’ model where students learn through active participation. Year 1 also features continuous assessments, with no final year exam, enabling students to monitor progress throughout the year. Bachelor of Science (Honours) Computer Games Development Overview

Games Development is one of the most exciting areas of software that one can work in. As one of the fastest growing industries, graduates of this programme are sought after by industry leaders such as Demonware, Aeria Games and Swrve. The games industry is rapidly growing and Ireland is gaining international recognition as a centre of excellence due to the calibre of graduates in this field.This four-year honours programme provides students with the skills they need to become professional games developers. Students will acquire skills in software design and programming, game design, graphics programming, modelling, simulation and animation. On completion, students will have produced several complete game concepts in a playable form. Students will design and develop games for a range of platforms including PC, PlayStation Vita, Android, iOS, OUYA and Windows Phone. Lectures and course practicals cover game industry development technologies, including:

Programming languages: C#, C, C++, JavaScript, Python and HTML5;
Game engines and middleware such as Unreal Engine, Source Engine, Havok and PhysX;
Frameworks such as MonoGame, Cocos2d-x, OpenGL and DirectX;
