About the Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience)

Veterinary Science at the University of Adelaide has a unique focus on Australian livestock production, equine health, aquaculture and biosecurity and involves input from a range of partner institutions, government agencies and industry.

This Bachelor program forms the first part of the veterinary science program. It is followed by a three-year postgraduate coursework Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program that focuses on the clinical skills required for veterinary practice. Students satisfactorily completing the undergraduate degree and 12 weeks of Extra Mural Studies placements will gain direct entry into the postgraduate program.

High School 90%, IB 31

Prerequisites

Mathematics and Chemistry. Applicants must also complete a written questionnaire and undergo multiple mini interviews.

About the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) at the University of Adelaide is a three year , 72 unit postgraduate degree program in clinical veterinary science that aims to complete the veterinary training and allow registration of the graduate as a veterinarian.  The program is at the Masters by coursework level. Most students will enter this program after completion of the Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience) program at the University of Adelaide.  However, students with a recognized pre-veterinary or veterinary degree may also be eligible for entry.

It should be noted that you can not study this program part-time.

Career Paths

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at the University of Adelaide aims to allow registration as a veterinarian in Australasia.  Graduates may also advance to research training via the Master of Science and/or PhD route or to clinical specialty training via the residency and specialty examination route.

Professional Recognition

The veterinary science program at the University of Adelaide has been granted accreditation by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK).  Graduates from this program are eligible for registration as veterinarians in all states of Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. In order to meet these professional expectations, graduates must be able to demonstrate their ability to perform various animal handling, manipulative, therapeutic and diagnostic techniques.
