La Trobe University Master of Occupational Therapy Practice Overview

La Trobe University’s Master of Occupational Therapy Practice program in Australia aims to give graduates from another discipline a professional qualification in occupational therapy. Occupational therapy deals with people’s occupational needs and the loss of daily living skills that follow physical, emotional, psychological and social disorders. Occupational Therapists (OT’s) help individuals to become more independent and maximize personal productivity, wellbeing and quality of life through occupational performance.

Occupational Therapy students at La Trobe University in Australia develop knowledge and skills in assessment and treatment, the therapeutic use of occupations, intervention techniques, the design of equipment and adaptation of environments. La Trobe’s Occupational Therapy students are eligible for accreditation as an occupational therapist by the end of second year.

The graduate entry Occupational Therapy course at La Trobe University in Australia requires full-time enrolment, over two years, from early February to early December. It comprises 80 weeks of coursework (40 weeks per year), including 1000 hours of professional practice. First year within the program at La Trobe University includes a four-week full-time professional practice block, second year includes two 8-week full-time professional practice blocks.

The structure of the Problem Based Learning curriculum within the Occupational Therapy program at La Trobe University in Australia, over a typical week, comprises two PBL tutorials of two hour’s duration and two professional concepts or skill development classes of two hour’s duration each.

Clinical Work Experience

Master of Occupational Therapy Practice students at La Trobe University will do 1000 hours of professional practice placements. The work experience at La Trobe consists of four weeks in first year and two eight-week blocks and a project placement in second year.

Entry Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in health, education, social, psychological or biological sciences (or subsequent postgraduate study and/or relevant work experience) is preferred, completed within the last ten years with an overall grade average of 60% and a minimum grade average of 65% in your final year of studies.

Graduates  of the Master of Occupational Therapy Practice at La Trobe University may be eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists (AAOT).
