The Juris Doctor (JD) program offered at The University of Sydney ushered in a new era for the Sydney Law School and its teaching of law at graduate level. A comprehensive three-year degree, it has an unrivalled international focus, where you receive a comprehensive overview of the practice and profession of the law in Australia and how it relates globally, trans-nationally and internationally.

There has never been a greater demand for legal advice and innovative approaches to problem solving than today. The Sydney Law School Juris Doctor (JD) develops your skills of analysis, research, writing and advocacy and prepares you to move with confidence across national boundaries.

Course Structure

Candidates for the University of Sydney Juris Doctor complete 144 credit points or 25 units of study comprising a fixed curriculum for the first two years. In the third year, there is one compulsory unit of study, Private International Law A, and then students are able to select units of study from a broad range of electives (including one jurisprudence elective). A full-time study load entails 48 credit points per year. Most units of study consist of three contact hours per week for thirteen weeks. A normal full-time class load is 12 contact hours per week.

Capstone experience

You will be required to complete a capstone experience in their final year to draw together and synthesize prior learning and experience, and form the basis for further intellectual and professional growth. You will meet this requirement by completing a Jurisprudence elective. Other electives taken in final year which include external placements, mooting activities or research projects, may also provide a capstone experience.

The Sydney JD – Pathways to Oxford

Sydney Law School is proud to offer pathways from the University of Sydney Juris Doctor (JD) to the Oxford Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL).

The agreement will allow high-achieving students to be offered early admission to the BCL. Instead of completing the final semester of the Juris Doctor (JD) in Sydney, you will be awarded both a Sydney Juris Doctor (JD) and Oxford BCL. Oxford’s Bachelor of civil Law (BCL) is one of the most highly esteemed master’s-level qualifications in the common law world.
