Facilities

The Department of Chiropractic has state-of-the-art facilities to enable teaching of manual therapy and patient assessment. These include purpose built rooms for radiology, orthopaedics, rehabilitation and case management. Audio-visual equipment allows for the recording and presentation of chiropractic and other procedures for presentation during practical class. Remote video playback by students is possible enhancing the learning process. Multiple camera angles and mixed media presentations are used. The Radiographic Positioning Laboratory contains actual x-ray equipment that allows the student to simulate radiographic positioning and image capture without exposing student on to ionizing radiation. The Radiographic Learning laboratory provides an x-ray reading library with viewing stations so that students may improve their diagnostic skills and report writing

The Department runs introductory anatomy and histology units at Macquarie. They utilize the wet lab facilities in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences where second and third year students do further study in anatomy in wet labs with cadavers.

Currently, the Department maintains three Chiropractic Clinics. These are located at Summer Hill, Eastwood and on Campus. These Clinics are designed to provide clinical intern training for final-year Master of Chiropractic students

Degrees Offered

• Bachelor of Chiropractic Science: 3 Years, approx. AUD $34,980 per year (2016 fees)
• Master of Chiropractic: 2-3 Years, approx AUD $42,400 per year (2016 fees)

Combined, these two degrees, taken over five years, are equivalent to the Doctor of Chiropractic offered at overseas institutions. During the final year, students undertake 12 months of clinical practice at one of our chiropractic clinics prior to graduation.

Entry Requirements

• Bachelor Of Chiropractic Science

Bachelor of Chiropractic Science requires an ATAR score of 80.00

• Master Of Chiropractic

Master of Chiropractic requires completion of the MQ Bachelor of Chiropractic Science with a GPA of 2.5. In this case the master degree will require only 2 years to complete.

Students who have completed a bachelor degree in health or medical science may be eligible for entry to the master degree but it will typically require 3 years to complete and applicants must have satisfactorily completed undergraduate units in anatomy and physiology.

1. Equivalent Units for Pre-requisite Knowledge Area is Musculoskeletal (MSK) Anatomy and Systems Physiology.
2. Applicants must study the basic concepts of anatomical sciences including gross anatomy, histology and embryology. The anatomy of the major body systems as well as additional study specifically in the area of musculoskeletal (MSK) anatomy of the upper limb and lower limbs, back and trunk, head and neck, must be completed.
3. Applicants must also study the physiology of the major systems of the body: the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the endocrine system, the immune and lymphatic system, the genitourinary system, as well as have a working knowledge of exercise physiology and pH/buffer systems.

Applicants will usually need to complete four subjects/units/courses to cover this material as follows:

1. An introductory anatomy of all the body systems
2. A unit on the upper and lower limbs, back and trunk anatomy
3. A unit on the Head and Neck anatomy
4. A unit on systems physiology

Specific Units of Study may be completed as a non-award unit of study or as part of a specified university’s course (either in the main degree or chosen as an elective) in order to cover the relevant assumed knowledge for the Master of Chiropractic.

Professional Recognition in Canada

The degrees offered at Macquarie University in Chiropractic are accredited and internationally recognized. Professional accreditation under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) requires the completion of an accredited 5-year chiropractic program conducted at a University within Australia, or the completion of an accredited program overseas that satisfies the requirements as set by The Council on Chiropractic Education Australasia Inc (CCEA).

Through Macquarie University the pathway to gain registration as a chiropractor in Australia and New Zealand is the successful completion of both the Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and the Master of Chiropractic (minimum of 5 years full time study) programs.

It is the student’s responsibility to contact their local credentialing body for re-entry pathways. The Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board (CCEB) is the national certification body for the chiropractic profession in Canada. Upon returning, students must go through an evaluation procedure with the CCEB.
