Overview

Western Sydney University Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Overview

The School of Medicine at WSU offers a five year degree open to school leavers and graduates alike.

For the first two years of the Western Sydney University medical program students will be based on campus undertaking Problem-Based Learning Tutorials, Lectures and Practical classes. Balance the Scientific Basis of Medicine with your Personal and Professional development as a future medical practitioner. Medical students also spend one day at week at one of the Clinical Schools where you will start learning critical practical skills.

WSU Medical students have also got the opportunity to take a year out from the MBBS and undertake focused research training and experience with the Bachelor of Medical Research program.

Years 3-5 are focused on clinical training with placements in hospitals, general practices and community organizations. Medical students will come back to campus several times a year for ‘conference weeks’ and you will also be integrating your clinical experience with core foundation knowledge through a series of online ‘scientific streams.’

In Year Three of the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery program, your year is divided into three. Students will undertake placements with two medical teams and in two surgical teams. In our Medicine-in-Context component, you will spend time with our community partners as well in general practices.

Year Four is full of variety with placements in Mental Health, Oncology/Palliative Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and complete a Community Medicine Group Project.

Some students will have the opportunity to spend twelve months (from the middle of Year 4 to the middle of Year 5) at one of our Rural Clinical Schools in Bathurst or Lismore.

Year Five cements your experience with medical and surgical teams in addition to placements in Critical Care, General Practice and Indigenous Health.

An elective term provides the opportunity for you to explore an area of medicine that you develop a particular interest in, and research skills are developed throughout the program
