The University of Adelaide, School of Dentistry was established in 1920, and is one of the oldest and most distinguished dental schools in the Australian university sector. The University of Adelaide offer a highly rated 5 year undergraduate entry Dental program, Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

Adelaide’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery is a 5 year professional degree that can be entered directly from high school or university. Many undergraduate professional degrees in Australia can be entered directly from high school, including Adelaide’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

Students entering the Bachelor of Dental surgery at The University of Adelaide will experience a variety of innovative, high quality and flexible learning approaches, including small groups for collaborative learning, case studies, integrated learning packages and clinical placements at metropolitan, rural and interstate venues.

The University of Adelaide’s Dental School offer students a leading edge Dental Simulation Clinic providing an opportunity to practise real-world patient care procedures in a technologically integrated environment. The University of Adelaide’s Dental School is one of the worlds Top Dental schools, and is one of Australia’s only Dental Schools offering PBL (problem based learning) teaching methods. This model of teaching is becoming common place within Medical Programs, both in Canada as well as Australia.

Graduates of The University of Adelaide’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery program will be fully qualified to sit examinations to register as a dentist with the Dental Board of Australia, as well as being able to sit for the Dental Examining Board of Canada (DEB) examination to practice as a dentist (in Canada).

Entry Requirements

Completed High School Diploma minimum 85% or, University Undergraduate Degree with an equivalent minimum GPA of 5.0 (based on a 7 point scale). Approximately 70%.

Two subjects: One from chemistry, Mathematics or Physics and one from Biology, Chemistry, Geology or Physics.

DAT is not required.

Selection into The University of Adelaide’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery will be based on three components:

  • Performance in PQA
  • Performance in a structured oral assessment (interview)
  • Meeting the minimum academic threshold

Professional Recognition

The University of Adelaide’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery program is fully accredited by the Australian Dental Council.

Graduates from The University of Adelaide’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery program will be fully qualified to practice dentistry upon completion of the degree and Australian licensing examinations, as well as being eligible to sit for the Dental Examining Board of Canada (DEB) examination to practice as a Dentist (in Canada).

In 2010, the Australian Dental Council and the Commission on Dental accreditation of Canada signed a reciprocal agreement which allows accredited graduates of either body to practice dentistry in Australia or Canada. This means Canadian students returning home with dentistry degrees from accredited Australian Dental Schools can follow the same licensing process as Canadian domestic graduates. Canadian license will be fully granted upon successful completion of the National Exam administered through the Canadian National Dental Examining Board (NDEB)
