The Master of Teaching (Primary) at the University of Newcastle is a two year program, producing outstanding graduates ready to enter a rewarding career as a primary teacher.

Throughout the program you will study the six key learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Physical Development, Health and Physical Education, Creative Arts, and Human Society and its Environment. University of Newcastle’s areas of study include educational psychology and sociology, using and undertaking research in your classroom, Aboriginal Education and how to teach children with Special Needs.

To effectively prepare you for the job you will undertake 60 days’ formal professional experience in schools, as well as have many opportunities for ongoing contact with our partner schools. At the completion of your Master of Teaching (Primary) you will be prepared to begin your career teaching students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

The University of Newcastle’s unique approach incorporates an emphasis on Quality Teaching, the NSW model of pedagogy developed and refined by researchers at the University.

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Newcastle is a two year program, producing highly competent and fully qualified graduates ready to enter a rewarding career as a secondary teacher.

Throughout the program you will examine the key concepts and theories from educational philosophy, psychology and sociology as they relate to teaching and learning, explore language as a social practice, the principles and practice of quality teaching, the use and conduct of educational research, the integration of new technologies into learning and curriculum essentials for the discipline/s you are preparing to teach. To effectively prepare you for the job you will undertake 60 days’ formal professional experience in school settings, and have many opportunities for ongoing involvement with our partner schools.

At the completion of your Master of Teaching (Secondary) you will be prepared to begin your career teaching students from Year 7 through to 12.

Entry Requirements

An approved undergraduate Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a sub-major in two specialist areas taught in secondary schools.

Professional Recognition in Canada

Graduates of an accredited initial teacher education program are eligible for registration with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW, and can pursue careers as teachers in Government and non-Government education sectors both nationally and internationally.

Graduates of The University of Newcastle’s Master of Teaching programs are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
