About the Master of Teaching (Secondary)

The Master of Teaching provides a professional preparation for students interested in working as a teacher in a secondary (7-12) school setting. (A primary (K-6) pathway is not currently available in this degree). It provides students with a sound theoretical base for teaching along with opportunities to develop a repertoire of professional skills. Through the course students build skills in evidence-based professional decision making as well as in planning and implementing effective teaching and learning. The course features an extensive engagement with schools and current teachers in addition to the traditional practicum.

The course is delivered using intensive classes and online approaches to increase the time students have access to schools. Students should be aware that with many school-based activities, the course does require a significant day-time attendance.

This course offers a ‘vertical’ pathway with an approved credit transfer arrangement allowing students at University of Canberra or Australian National University to complete some of the course as part of their undergraduate programs and so accelerate their overall study program. Enrolment packages including a number of undergraduate degrees and this Masters course are available.

This course also offers a professional pathway for currently qualified teachers to convert their existing teaching qualification to the Master of Teaching award. This pathway typically requires one year of full time equivalent study and allows students to develop their skills and knowledge in the evaluation of learning and education programs and/or add a teaching area to their qualifications, dependant on previous study. This pathway is open to teachers with a K-12 teaching qualification recognized for teacher registration in Australia.

Entry Requirements for the Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Applicants must have a degree from a tertiary institution or an equivalent qualification including at least one major of discipline and preferably at least one minor of discipline-specific study relevant secondary school curriculum in two different disciplines.

Applicants not offered a place in the Master of Teaching will be automatically assessed for admission to the Bachelor of Secondary Education (Graduate Entry). Applicants do not need to apply for both courses.
