About the Master of Teaching (Secondary)

University of Adelaide’s Master of Teaching is a two-year program for students who have completed an undergraduate degree who wish to become secondary school teachers. Successful completion of this degree satisfies the academic requirements to apply for registration with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. This degree also caters for those entering post-secondary educational institutions and those professions that may benefit from a study of the theory and practice of education.

The Master of Teaching is equivalent to a standard two years of full-time study. The accelerated program is able to be completed by students in a full-time duration of 1.5 years.

Program Structure

The courses taught cover issues in education such as professional practice; learning and motivation; the social context of education; student-teacher interaction; and curriculum and assessment in the Australian context. Students undertake studies in curriculum areas related to their undergraduate qualifications and teaching specialisations and complete two full-time supervised teaching blocks in South Australian schools of 65 days total. Students undertake a significant practice based research project in the second year.

Entry Requirements for the Master of Teaching (Secondary)

  • A Bachelor degree or equivalent from a recognised Australian or International higher education institution
  • At least a major or minor and preferably two majors in the bachelor degree which align with the available specialist teaching areas*
  • Other non-academic criteria may also applied
  • Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of around 70%.

Professional Recognition in Canada

University of Adelaide’s Master of Teaching Secondary provides a professional qualification that is recognized for teacher registration purposes in South Australia. In most cases the qualification is portable to other states and overseas countries.

Graduates of Adelaide’s Master of Teaching Secondary are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
