About the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)

Australian Catholic University’s Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) is for graduates who want to become secondary school teachers and have an appropriate undergraduate degree. Graduates may be eligible for employment in Catholic and other faith-based schools, independent and government high schools and other secondary schools in Queensland. All units other than professional experience may be offered in attendance or online.

Depending on your undergraduate degree, this course will prepare you to teach two specialist areas including:

• Accounting
• Business Studies
• Drama
• Economics
• English
• Humanities and Social Sciences (History, Geography and Study of Society)
• Information and Communication Technology
• Languages other than English
• Mathematics
• Music
• Physical Education
• Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Science 21)
• Visual art

The Graduate Diploma in Education Secondary at ACU requires students to successfully complete 60 days of mentored Professional Experience Placements in one or more secondary schools.

Students who undertake the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) may also concurrently complete the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education to gain accreditation to teach Religious Education in Catholic schools.

Entry Requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)

Bachelor degree with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of around 70%. Applicants must also nominate two subject areas for which, based on their Bachelor studies, they believe they are qualified, to teach. The Faculty of Education and Arts will assess students’ suitability for these methods during the admissions process.

Professional Recognition in Canada

Australian Catholic University’s Master of Teaching (Primary) is accredited by the Queensland College of Teachers, the NSW Institute of Teachers and the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Accreditation is also recognized by the ACT Teacher Quality Institute. Graduates of this course may seek employment in a primary school setting.

Graduates of ACU’s Graduate Diploma in Education Secondary are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
