You’ll gain teaching skills across physical education, technology, science, humanities, literacy and numeracy. Your subjects will also cover contemporary teaching methods, curriculum theory, lesson planning and classroom management – all of which will shape the way you run your classes.

At La Trobe you’ll learn how to design lesson plans, integrate technology into curriculum design, and develop strategies to promote effective learning. You’ll also be able to evaluate strategies that support students’ well-being, as well as inclusive student participation.

Your subjects will be taught through a blend of online distance learning and 15 days of face-to-face classes, delivered in three five-day blocks at our Melbourne Campus. To build practical teaching experience, you’ll participate in 60 days of supervised teaching practice and complete a practitioner research project.

You have the option to complete this degree through an accelerated 18-month path, or extended over 30 months.

As well as a preparing you for a successful career in teaching, this degree also creates an opportunity to undertake further research in education.

La Trobe University’s  course is held to high professional and ethical teaching standards and is recognized by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). VIT registration is recognized in other states and territories too.

Add a secondary teaching qualification to your undergraduate degree with La Trobe University’s two-year Master of Teaching (Secondary) program. You’ll graduate with the skills and knowledge you need to work in government, independent and Catholic schools across Australia.

Your subjects will cover state and national curricula, curriculum theory, teaching methodologies and classroom management. You’ll be taught through a blend of online learning and on-campus classes (15 days of face-to-face classes in three five-day blocks). To build your experience in the classroom, you’ll also undertake 60 days of supervised teaching practice.

You’ll specialize in two teaching subjects from disciplines that match those studied in your undergraduate degree. Choose from mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, general science, psychology, physical education, outdoor education, humanities, history, business studies, geography, information technology, media studies, English, arts (visual, dance, drama), student welfare, health education, English as an Additional Language (EAL), vocational education and training (VET) and Languages other than English (LOTE).

During your last semester, you’ll develop your research skills and undertake a project to develop your education research methodology and practice. This will help you to build a pathway to further research studies in education.

La Trobe students are teaching maths, English, science and languages across Australia.

La Trobe’s course is held to high professional and ethical teaching standards and is recognized by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), which is recognized in other states and territories too.

There’s flexibility in how you study as you can complete the course in two years of full-time study. You can also choose to accelerate your studies so you finish within 1.5 years, or extend your study over 2.5 years.

Entry Requirements

An approved undergraduate Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a sub-major in two specialist areas taught in secondary schools.

Professional Recognition in Canada

The course is a recognized qualification for registration as a teacher by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). This means you’ll be eligible to work as a teacher in Victoria, and other Australian states and territories.

Graduates of La Trobe’s Master of Teaching programs are eligible to apply for licensing in Canada, however, it is critical students understand the requirements needed to complete this process before licensing will be granted.
